My Dad was a farmer, my Mother had the traditional role of a housewife raising 2 kids, cooking 3 meals a day, doing laundry and cleaning house. Except that Mom also had 300 chickens which she fed and watered twice a day, gathered the eggs they layed, washed and packed them for sale. She also planted a garden, watered and weeded it, harvested and canned/froze enough vegetables to last a family of four for a whole year. During haying season she was called on to stack a few hundred 70 lb bales of hay in the barn but otherwise did little of the actual farming. In the evenings she would sew, crochet and quilt to keep her hands busy. Mom is approaching 102 years of age now and although she can’t do all those physical things she can still tell you which garden seeds grow best, how to plant them, when to pick tomatoes to ripen on your windowsill, how to pickle cucumbers and ferment sauerkraut.
